Causes Behind Keloid
A keloid occurs due to the overgrowth of tissue during the place of fully healed injury. Keloids are fibrous nodules, firm, and rubbery lesion, which vary in color from red to dark brown or flesh colored to pink in color. Keloids come with severe itchiness, sharp pains and changes in skin texture and they are non-contagious.
A keloid may turn into an ulcer if it is infected. The only way to treat a keloid is to take out the scar completely. However, the probability of resulting surgery scar also turning into a keloid is generally more that 50%.
Keloids are formed due to collagen, which tends to overgrow in a wounded area. Generally, they occur in a wounded area but they can also appear spontaneously. They occur due to acne, piercing, pimple and chickenpox. They are times sensitive to chlorine. Keloids can affect both male and female equally although the chances of it appearing in female patient are more as compared to that of male counterpart. It has been observed that people with African descent are more vulnerable to keloids.
Treatments For Keloid
There are some treatments for keloids depending on its effectiveness such as Hexilak gel or Contractubex gel, Tea tree oil, radiation therapy, crushed aspirin paste and laser therapy.
